The goal of RENEW: Why Catholic? is two-fold: first, to help adult Catholics be mature in faith and well-equipped to share the Gospel; and second, to form men and women of prayer whose faith is alive and vital, grounded in a deep commitment to the person and message of Jesus.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) is divided into four parts:
The Profession of Faith focuses on the great mysteries of our faith.
The Celebration of the Christian Mystery emphasizes celebrating our faith in the sacraments and liturgy.
Life in Christ focuses on human dignity, freedom, and the moral teachings of the Catholic faith.
Christian Prayer looks more deeply at our relationship with God and how we nurture that relationship in prayer.
The United States Catholic Catechism for Adults, an adaptation of the CCC, follows the arrangement of the universal catechism:
The Creed: The Faith Professed
The Sacraments: The Faith Celebrated
Christian Morality: The Faith Lived
Prayer: The Faith Prayed
RENEW: Why Catholic? series corresponds with the four pillars of the Catechism:
Christian Prayer: Deepening My Experience of God (12 sessions)
Three sessions focus on prayer and how God communicates with us. Six sessions look at different forms of prayer and some difficulties we experience in prayer. Three sessions offer deeper insights into the Lord’s Prayer. Using what the Catechism says about prayer as a guide, the sessions include various styles of prayer for participants’ use.
The Profession of Faith: What We Believe (12 sessions)
These sessions look at the truths that we, as Catholics, believe. This section offers insights on what it means to be a Catholic following “the oldest Roman catechism, the Apostles’ Creed.”
The Celebration of the Christian Mystery: Sacraments (12 sessions)
This section begins with an explanation of the liturgy and treats each of the sacraments and their significance for the individual and for the parish community.
Life in Christ: Walking with God (12 sessions)
Six sessions center on our freedom and responsibility, conscience, virtues, moral law, and grace. Six sessions concentrate on the implications of the Ten Commandments.
We will be using one of the four parts each of the four years.
