Dear Sisters and Brothers,

A few weeks ago, just before Christmas, I read an article about the many young adults who were returning to church. They liked the music, the pageantry, the singing but not the dogmas. One young person was quoted as saying, "I go to church to meet other people my age, and to rediscover my own spirituality but I don't pay any attention to all those dogmas." Awful, right? All those dogmas? Of course, I wondered, "What dogmas? Can anybody name one?" All those stodgy old Church fathers of the past just sat around and tried to fry our brains with all those dogmas, didn't they? God forbid that anyone should wonder if every now and then in those centuries past the Church fathers were simply trying to be a little helpful! It seems to be fashionably dogmatic not to like dogmas. Anybody care to look at things in a new light?

In the Gospel today Jesus begins ministering to the needs of the people and preaching. He chases a demon out of a possessed man and people start gathering around him to hear him teach and preach about the Kingdom of God. The folks were amazed at him and commented that, “he spoke with authority.” Does that mean that Jesus also spoke dogmatically? No! He too was speaking the love and the Kingdom of God and trying to help people experience it.

Our role as disciples of Jesus and members of the Body of Christ is to continue Christ’s healing, forgiving, demon chasing, and teaching. These are the roles and responsibilities of all disciples, not just the “Church fathers.” Our called and ordained leaders guide us and help us still. But the role of the Church (all of us) is to guide, heal, and help the world in whatever ways possible as God’s people alive in this world.

Peace and Blessings,

GENERATIONS OF FAITH” THEME-------ADVENT 2011-ADVENT 2012   WHY CATHOLIC?

FOURTH SUNDAY in ORDINARY TIME

Psalm 95, the Responsorial Psalm for this Sunday, is the standard opening for the Liturgy of the Hours.  This Psalm is recited or chanted each morning in monasteries, churches, and homes throughout the world.  It reminds us that all Creation is a gift from God and calls us to praise and worship.

Come let us sing joyfully to the Lord; let us acclaim the rock of our salvation.  Let us come into His presence with thanksgiving; let us joyfully sing psalms to Him.  If today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts.  Come let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the Lord who made us.  For He is our God, and we are the people He shepherds.  The flock He guides.  If today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts.

As Paul said to the Corinthians, “I should like you to be free of anxieties.”  Our faith as Christians offers all of us—whatever our life circumstances—moments of peace.  Hear the voice of God, find this peace and then praise and worship.
