MAY 18th  READINGS

    First Reading:   Exodus 34:4b-6, 8-9

Second Reading:   2 Corinthians 13:11-13

                Gospel:   John 3:16-18

This weekend we honor our mothers and we lift them up with our prayers, as well.  It is hard to imagine all the things a mom does over their lifetime for each of their children.  From giving birth, to being there for all the little disappointments, to helping organize their wedding or ordination, plus a thousand other things besides!

Each of us, no doubt, has our own stories of special things our moms did for us, that illustrate their total love and commitment.

For me, some of those memories go to when my brother had a compound fracture of his skull, and recalling the love and attention mom gave to him during his recovery.  Also, the time our dog got hit and had a broken hip, and mom carrying the dog up and down the steps until it was healed.  The list could go on and on, and maybe they even did things for us that we weren't even aware of at the time.  For example, mom got "fired" by dad from driving the hay truck, because she ran over too many bales out in the field.  Well, just maybe, she saw the eager look on my face, as a 10-year-old, wanting to get behind the wheel, and she arranged to get fired so I could be pressed into service.  She would never admit to it, but that might have been her motiv,e so as to help me get "promoted".

We men can never have the same relationship as a mom, and we who are celibate can't have the same relationship as biological fathers do with their kids, but we do get the joy, in some ways, of having children. I've been blessed to have become friends with 100's of young people over the years, and some ask us to be a part of their lives at special moments, like weddings.

This weekend, I'm in Arlington, Virginia,  celebrating a wedding for a young man I became friends with, along with his family, while I was in Danville, for the two years I served at the parish.  This young man was somewhat of a "rebel" as a teenager, and so maybe we bonded well because I wasn't much of a rebel as a teen, (but maybe wanted to be), but I challenged him on some issues and he has eventually grown into a fine young man.  He has moved beyond his "rebel" stage and is a very productive young man.  It will be good to be with him and his family again, and I will feel a sense of pride in knowing I had a little bit to do in his upbringing.

Back to our moms, let us salute them and give thanks for their many acts of love, which helped each of us become the people we are today.  Even when they are gone, they are never forgotten!

Love and prayers,

Happy Mother’s Day!!

                    ADVENT 2007-ADVENT 2008

PRAYER/SPIRITUALITY

Moms and the Holy Spirit have more in common than the fact that we celebrate both today.  Daily in mom’s constant advice to their children, correction and direction, moms mirror the role of the Holy Spirit.

The Pentecost Sequence at Mass makes this clear, describing the Holy Spirit as “of comforters the best”, “solace in the midst of woe”, and “blessed Light divine.”  This ancient prayer also petitions the Spirit to “bend the stubborn heart and will” and “guide the steps that go astray”.  Even more than we relied on our mothers, we can rely on the Holy Spirit.

Come, Holy Spirit, come with Your grace to renew, refresh, and strengthen all mothers.  Help us to give them the love and respect they deserve.---Adapted from “My Daily Visitor”, Lisa Ferguson

PLEASE PRAY for world peace and respect for all life, from conception to natural death.

Pray that the Virgin Mary’s example of faith in accepting her unexpected pregnancy may inspire and strengthen any women of today who are facing pregnancy.  May we also pray for courage in defending the sacredness of ALL human life.  Happy Mother’s Day.

BICENTENNIAL MOMENT:      Bishop Peter Joseph Lavialle died on May 11, 1867, after serving as 3rd bishop of the diocese for only 2 years.  Lavialle had served the Louisville diocese as a priest since 1844.  He was pastor of St. Louis Church and then, president of St. Mary’s College.  During the Civil Way, he worked in the battlefields, dressing wounds and praying with soldiers.  The Holy Father twice asked him to be Bishop of Savannah, and he twice refused.  He was consecrated as the Bishop of Louisville on September 24, 1865.

Each of us had been given unique talents to share with others.  Time and treasure are similar to everyone—they only differ in amounts.  The gifts of our talents are the most personal aspect of our stewardship.
